Once clean and shiny perform tinning and now your tool is ready to use. This method allows you to get rid of carbon and oxides. Just try to wipe it off after every 4-5 solder joints.
Wipe the iron on a damp sponge to remove the excess. It doesnt matter too much if its ugly as long as you can get a nice shiny bit right at the tip. Then dip into the tin of tinner cleaner with a slight twisting action.
