How to sterilise glass jars. Place in the microwave and turn on high usually around 1000 watts for 30-45 seconds. Place the jars on the shelf ensuring that they are not touching one another. Line each oven shelf with a double layer of newspaper or baking paper making sure to keep the paper away from any flames.
Cover the glass jars completely with hot but not boiling water the water will need to be about one inch above the jars. Pop the wrapped jars in a large saucepan cover with water then bring to a simmer then simmer for 20 mins. Place the jars and bottles in the microwave and heat on full power for 60 seconds.
Wash the jars in water and leave wet. The basic principle when sterilising jars is a four step process. Wash the jars thoroughly in hot soapy water rinse then dry.
Place jars neck up on an oven tray and place tray in oven for minimum 20 minutes. Next rinse well to ensure no traces of soap. Bring to the boil and keep at the maximum temperature for 10 minutes turn the heat off and cover the pan to keep the jars warm until you are ready to fill them.
You can also place the jars into a large pan of boiling water for 10 minutes. It might take a bit longer than some of the other methods of sterilizing your jars but despite this still only takes about half an hour total. Do not attempt to sterilise your Kilner Bottles and Kilner Jars by pouring boiling water into them.
Place a double layer of newspaper on a baking sheet and place the glassware and the lids on top of it arranging it so the jars dont touch each other. The first thing you need to do to seal food in glass jars will be to sterilize the canning jars mason jars or glass containers that you will use. Sterilize the jars for about 20 minutes.
