How To Solder Two Solid Wires Together
Your solder will be applied opposite from the iron on top of the wire.
How to solder two solid wires together. If you want to join two wires with solder the first thing you should do is to tin the two wires. Thats where the Lineman splice comes in. Wire splicing and soldering is a basic skill that any DIYer can masterbut it all starts with a solid connection between the two wires.
Touch the tip of the soldering iron to the copper wires. Strip off about 1 inch of the insulation from each end of the two wires using the wire strippers. Solder is attracted to heat so as the solder melts it is pulled towards the heat through the wires connecting every strand together with solder.
Slide the heat shrink over the newly soldered connection so it is completely covered. Get the liquid solder filler into the wire tip. Then the normal soldering techniques apply.
Do it in such a way that the wraps do not overlay. Press the ends of the wire down with your fingers to pliers to form a solid mechanical connection. RMA rosin flux is best.
The wires need to be clean in order to make a good. There are multiple techniques for splicing wires without solder that result in a tight wrap including some that overlap the wires before twisting to give a larger overall spliced area. Strip off about 1 inch of the insulation from each end of the two wires using the wire strippers.
It will be necessary to add a little more solder to really fill in the cracks and get a high strength low resistance joint. Here the solder does not act as a glue that holds the two wires together. Make seven or eight turns and cut the excess of the wire.
